DISRUPTING THE MONOLINGUAL BIAS

tackle the monolingual bias in your school district

Language Ideology is not a curricular problem, it’s a beliefs and attitudes problem.

el prejuicio monolingüe limita los resultados académicos de los estudiantes multilingües

Teachers who misunderstand the relationship between language teaching and instruction end up advocating for “sink or swim” practices that result in accelerated pacing of curricula.

This is the Monolingual Bias at work.

Research tells us linguistic biases leads to limited academic outcomes for our MLLs. The elephant in the room is this: it’s not a curricular problem, it’s a beliefs and attitudes problem.

For all these reasons, schools need to invest in exploring their attitudes around language. This workshop helps teachers and school leaders unpack their unconscious beliefs, attitudes, and ideas about language and bilingual/ESL learners themselves. We do this through a combination of teacher reflection exercises, language ideology work, and practical support.

In this workshop, You will get:

The Language Ideology Toolkit

A set of theories, practices and resources that buoy self-reflection around the beliefs and attitudes that accompany deficit narratives around MLLs/ELLs.

Role Plays, Bilingual Journey interviews, and art-based activities

These ask teachers to explore the messy parts of their lived experiences in an effort to heal and nurture their bilingual identities. How can we extend grace to our students when we lack it within ourselves?

Opening discussion framing the role of our lived experiences

…and how these influence our thinking and decision-making around the support of bilingual learners.
