professional development Workshops

All workshops are offered in English and Spanish

So often a bilingual ed initiative gets dropped into school districts with little to no support for those tasked with implementing & monitoring their success.

About the workshops

Bilingual Ed 101

reviews the different program models, language allocation options, and student services. This is where you can ask all the policy and compliance questions you’re unsure about as well as make decisions that best serve your local school community.

Linguistic Scaffolds 101

is a hands-on series of activities that gives teachers new to bilingual classrooms real solutions they can use with their MLLs TOMORROW. This workshop is consistently one of the highest-rated offerings on the basis of follow-up inquires for more linguistic scaffolds.

Translanguaging 101

covers the theoretical and practical approaches to opening up the linguistic landscape in your schools. In this workshop, we clarify myths, explore real-life instances of linguistic pluralism, and invest in bilingual assessment solutions that nudge your MLLs towards empowering outcomes (be they social, academic, or personal).

close reading with juicy sentences

takes text analysis to a whole new level. This cutting-edge workshop embeds the best of educational linguistics strategies to prepare teachers to conduct a “levels 1-2-3” analysis with any text type. Your MLLs will be making inferences and asking critical questions of texts in no time.

disrupting the monolingual bias

is a nice accompaniment to any ABAR work being done in your district. Teachers move through a series of reflections on their personal journeys learning language while also engaging in some deep “un-learning” of myths around second language acquisition. Teacher attitudes and beliefs around language are explored, asking them to invite fresh, new identities as bilinguals into their classrooms.

Biliteracy FTW

explores the four components of a strong biliteracy framework as well as key instructional strategies that cut to the core of paired literacy instruction. Teachers engage in a biliteracy self-assessment to ignite their curiosity around areas of growth.

any of these workshops can be offered as half-day, full-day, or a distributed professional development series.
